Tingshu’s Garden in Winter

Even after snow falls, this New England garden is full of color and structure that keeps the interest going

We could n’t head off it always . No matter how hard we contain onto fall , winter comes rolling along and for many of us that also means snow . Today ’s photos come from Tingshu Hu and her husband Philip Zhao in Dunstable , Massachusetts . We ’ve seen different aspects of their infinite during the flower season ( Tingshu ’s Front Garden in Late Summer , Summer in Tingshu ’s Back Garden , Low Maintenance Garden in Massachusetts , A Space Created with Chinese Design Elements and English Garden Aesthetics , etc . ) , but today we ’re get a face at the pursuit Tingshu has manage to create even when the gardens are coated in a layer of snow .

Four time of year interests , especially wintertime views , are indispensable for a home garden in New England , since we have 4 + months of winter , handle in Baron Snow of Leicester and ice . The contrast of colours and shapes against the white snowy background signal are still attracting us to go outside and explore the garden in wintertime .

Snow came latterly this year . We receive the first snow on December 5 , 2024 . Philip took some pictures while it was snowing . The centrepiece of the back garden is the Prairifire crabapple tree(Malus× ‘ Prairifire ’ , Zones 4–8).Several pictures were accept go around the crabapple tree diagram .

There are numerous red berry on the crabapple tree , attracting many birds in winter . On the correct side is a dwarf Colorado dismal spruce(Piceapungens‘Glauca ’ , zone 2–8),lightly frosted in livid snow . you could also see a pergola and garden fencing through the tree branch .

take care from below the red-faced crab apple Charles Edward Berry , there are dark spruce , yew , azalea , bare offshoot of a cornel , and an arbor . Further beyond , there are several pine tree diagram .

A magnolia tree , a Japanese maple(Acerpalmatumand cvs . , Zones 6–9)and a few azaleas stand above a stone retaining wall . There is a yew at the bottom of the picture .

Curb charm at the front garden : combination of pergola , fence and evergreen ( rhododendron , put on cypress and arborvitae ) , and aneastern redbud tree(Cercis canadensisand cvs . , Zones 4–9)on the left field . Outside the fencing are a untested Nipponese maple , a Au cone juniper(Juniperuscommunis‘Gold Cone ’ , Zones 5–7)and a dried maiden grass(Miscanthussinensis , Zones 5–9 ) .

Our dog Luke is enjoying the sun after the snow . In front of Luke is a white lotus in a mini pond , with dried flower head and stems . On the left side is a clip-clop bamboo . The colour of Chinese mums(Chrysanthemum×morifolium , Zones 5–9)are visible from the chalk of the green house . The fishpond under the pergola is frozen . All koi fish have been moved to a pond inside the solarium under the solar panels .

Chinese mummy look at the snow - covered front grand . deeply in the winter we may pick up heavier snow . Then the garden will have very different looks .
