The Mulberry Tree. September. 2014.
Since March I have been join in with Lucy ‘s tree adopt meme over atlooseandleafy . The musical theme is to watch a tree and see what happens to it over the month . Last month I drop a line about picking the luscious fruit . Now the Mulberry has just about finished fruiting and the WASP are dawdle over the last squashed and wither fruits .
So here the tree sit down , or rather lies , resting after all the effort . Its foliage are still not showing any pinch of Autumn color . Several blogging protagonist have state me that the aboriginal American mulberry tree : Morus rubrais considered as a weed as it seed around everywhere and becomes a pain . My mulberry : Morus nigracomes from Persia , although you might be forgiven for thinking that it comes from China , because like the panda it does n’t breed in captivity . It never seed around . You have to propagate it by charter cuttings .
The snowy mulberry : Morusalbacomes from China and this is where silk was first produced . According to legend it was chance on by accident 5000 year ago when the married woman of the Emperor , Xi Ling Shi drop a cocoon into a loving cup of hot piddle and catch up with it in her finger nail , she found that the silk could be unravelled . For centuries the secret of sericulture were closely guarded by the Chinese and it was not until 550 A.D. that two Persian monks were sent to China as spies to learn the arcanum of silk production . They smuggle out some cocoon in their bamboo staves and took them to Constantinople so that the Turks were able-bodied to lay down a silk industry . Silk devising was no longer a secret and the cognition spread think the Mediterranean . The crusades help to disperse the techniques . By the 12th century Italy was the silk capital of the West . The French were keen to develop their own manufacture and in 1594 , Henri IV subsidise the planting of mulberry orchards . Provence and Languedoc became very successful centres of the diligence and France soon became the second largest producer of silk . regard this success , James 1 was keen to introduce sericulture into England and he get in touch with the deputy lieutenants of all the county in England instructing them to verify that all property owner should plant mulberry tree . In 1607 an English version of a Gallic treatise on the care of silkworm was published . This was de Serre’s‘The Perfect use of Silk - wormes and theirbenefits . ‘ There was also a translation of Surflet ’s ‘ La Maison Rustique ‘ which was full of ready to hand hints on rearing ‘ these prettie creature ‘ . It seems they were not just pretty but demanding too . They postulate constant heat to live , so house had to be kept very affectionate . They were intend to hate noise so small fry had to play quietly . electric storm would put them off their food for thought and so would secure smells . They were fussy about hygienics too . The worst thing from a woman ’s point of sentiment though , was the mesmerism that theeggs should be brood out ‘ betwixt the breast of women ’ . Just imagine getting all ready to go into silk output , implant the trees and waiting for them to mature and then being told you had to hatch the testis out in your cleavage . You would n’t be capable to wear low- weakened dresses because of possible societal embarrassment . And apart from that , I am overnice , the view of it gives me the horror . It turned out that silkworms want more warmth than this country could furnish and they ask the leaves of the white mulberry tree to eat rather than the black mulberry which was plant here . I should guess any women who had translate the treatise would have have been extremely sticking out . I would have been .

I am afraid I am a piddling late with this stake as I have been away . I endeavor to keep up with other web log whilst I was out but I sometimes had a very intermittent cyberspace connection . I put up a couple of posts that I had prepared before I went aside but I was very surprised one evening to ascertain that I had reblogged a military post onRudbeckia‘Goldsturm ’ spell bythebikinggardener.com . I had only mean to like it so I do n’t quite bed how that happened . I prefer to save my own posts but the bike gardener is worth record . Many thanks to pricy Betty for the picture of me hatching out silkworm caterpillars .
To see other tree diagram -following posts please have a look atlooseanndleafy . give thanks you again for host this meme Lucy .

I ’m continually amazed by what you manage to fit into your tree following exercise ! And now you have a marvellous illustration too . I am left to enquire , however , how the author of the French treatise determined the efficaciousness of his proposed crosshatch method ( and did his wife poison him presently after publication ) ?
A wonderful tree and how nice it is still unripened … hold onto summertime as long as you’re able to .
Oh my , that would be … uncomfortable . Regarding the Mulberry Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , how nice that you ’re still getting Chuck Berry from it ! We have a Mulberry Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree up at our bungalow , and I do n’t experience what species it is ( I ’ll have to do a piddling research ) . Anyway , it does n’t seem invasive at all , and the berries are crack tasty . But it only produces yield in late June through mid - July .

Such an entertaining story , its amazing what our ancestors got up to ! bonk the painting , the thought of it is just too too awesome ! !
Oh what a brilliant picture from the oh so talented Betty but I do feel rather fidgety now . Silkworms sound quite sore and demand creatures . Interesting to see how green the mulberry look – no signs of fall yet .
wonderful story ! and thanks to “ dear Betty ” for the great image

ROFL , giant silkworm down the cleavage , I ’ll stay to drift crumbs thank you ! Loved the information though and the instance is fantastic .
I have scan your article on crop Mulberry tree diagram , but am a little baffled . I am planning to buy a non fruiting Mulberry Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree for my garden in France , but all the pruning I have seen does not even mention a “ unconditional canopy ” prune . Any idea how this is carried out . This seems very democratic in France especially along promenades etc . Roger
