SixOnSaturday

It is going to be nerve monkeys ! We are expecting a cold Orient malarkey and the Siberian weather to go with it . low gear of -5 ° c will be the least of it . the right way chilly . For those bemused by the face monkeys expression , perhaps those of you across yonder pond , the full phrase is “ moth-eaten enough to stop dead the bollock off a plaque monkey ” . This sounds rude , and I always think it was . In fact it ’s an older Royal Navy expression . The “ balls ” in doubt are cannon - musket ball , the brass triangle on which they were stacked was the “ monkey ” . If it was inhuman enough , the brass instrument contracted , causing the cannonball to tip off . Hence , cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey . You ’re welcome . Anyhow , metre for Six on Saturday – six things , in the garden , on a Saturday . Simples . Could be anything – a seedling , a problem fill out , a program , a flush ( lucky you ) , a vital opus of equipment , anything at all . Join in !

Here are my Six …

1.Anemanthele lessoniana , or Pheasant ’s tail end skunk . I ’ve catch several of these dotted about , they self semen prolifically . They are comfortable to spot though , and can be pulled up easily if unwanted . This one is growing in a terrace container . It was made by me adding say ego - sown seedlings to the pot every prison term I found one . It quite quick formed a decent size clump . It kind of glows with the light behind it .

2 . Raspberry . This is supporting . Last year ’s raspberries were disappointing . I planted new cane in a new location but then made the cub fault of mulch with spend mushroom compost – turns out the hiss do n’t like it limey . I got very small utile maturation last year and only one or two fruit off 12 canes . A month or two back I dug all the canes up , dug a big maw and replace the dirt with my garden compost , then replanted the cane . The fact that there is new growth is , I hope , a positive polarity of fruit to come .

3 . Periwinkle . This might as well be a weed as far as I ’m concerned . for certain , the flowers are courteous enough , but good grief does it scatter . Each spring I do battle with it , knock it back some , but frankly it is winning the warfare of attrition .

4 . Cuttings , R. ‘ Golden Ladder ’ . I took these rose cut in mid - November . There are five stems , three of which have new growth . No sign of root word at the bottom of the pot , but perhaps a 60 % succeeder rate , not regretful for hardwood cutting off . With a bit of fortune I will have three new climbing rose plants . Then I ’ll just need to come up a lieu to plant them .

5 . Hollyhock seedlings , ‘ Creme de cassis ’ . In the past I have been dismissive of althaea as great big hairy - leave weeds . Harsh ! I have come up to take account their height and flower power and am develop two or three unlike varieties from seed . I did a passel in September but those have suffered over the wintertime , possibly beyond save . This is a fresh good deal which seem to be doing nicely .

6 . Pulmonaria , or lungwort . I forget the variety , but I have it for the folio colour , which is a very bright silver when in its pomp . The flowers are so - so . It is just emerge from its winter rest . In a brace of months it will be fabulous , dearie .
