Have you heard that song “ Oom Sha La La ” by Haley Heynderckx ? It ’s folksy wild chick medicine , so I do n’t pick you if the unknown melodic phrase did n’t make your playlist . Have a listen if you ’d like — it ’s been my garden theme song this yr . To tally up the lyrics , this girl is know a pretty crummy existence , and the only matter that makes it better is set out a garden . After drift off depressing nonsequiturs , she starts shouting , “ I wanna start a garden ” over and over and over again . It ’s the kind of music that constitute you want to start a coffee - shop mosh pit . It ’s quirky , but it get me through the wintertime with my eye on the plunder .

And , well , we in the end made it . We get our garden . ( Cue derail and headbanging . )

In that sliver of clip between when the soil was too besotted to cultivate and when it would rain again for seven days straight , we managed to get the garden tilled and plants in the footing . It was three Clarence Shepard Day Jr. of severe work in 90 - academic degree high temperature — much much too hot for mid - May — but the garden season has officially begun . Overall , I ’m optimistic about the season before , and here ’s why :

1. The Asparagus Bed Is Weeded

Last class , I never finish weeding and mulch our 100 - foot - longasparagus bed(thank you , forenoon sickness ) . While it might have take me six weeks to complete the whole affair this twelvemonth ( thank you , cutest asparagus - patch infant in the earthly concern ) , it ’s finally done . Now , to keep those teasing sunup glory vine from taking over !

2. My Garden Goals Are on Track

The atmospheric condition this year , between bipolar temperatures and persistent precipitation , has made horticulture hard . Plus , I turn a loss several of my herbaceous plant showtime , which perish all of a sudden from unidentified causes . Despite these things , I ’m making dear progress toward mygarden goals :

3. I Learned to Use a Broadfork

I wish I could be a stately Fannie Farmer and say the intellect I delight using the broadfork is that it saved many of the precious microorganisms living in the grunge . I stand for , yes , that . But also , it ’s just really fun to habituate . Why inconvenience oneself with a workout routine when you have farm toys like this ?

4. I Get to Do It With MyFarmily

Yes , I exit there with a cheesy punning . But really , some of the effective moments of the past hebdomad have been out on the dry land with Mr. B. , the sweetened pea plant and our ally whose gardens call our land home . You see , our goal with this Din Land is to share it . If we get to the point in the next 40 years where we originate all the produce and maybe some of the meat that we eat , that will be a win , but our real hope is that we can share this space with hoi polloi we wish about .

This year , we have a dyad of friends gardening alongside us , and that ’s really awesome — particularly because I ’m a new mom and inhabit 30 minutes from townspeople , so the whole getting out affair does n’t befall much . But really , it ’s neat to have ally nearby to help oneself lend a hand , lecture over melodic theme and laugh when get out weeds .

And to have an oom sha la la dance party with to celebrate starting that garden !
