The Executive Board has appointed Jochem Evers as professor and chairholder of Crop Physiology in the Plant Sciences Group at Wageningen University & Research ( WUR ) . The fitting is in effect from 1 November , and Evers will be succeeding Paul Struik .

Jochem Evers was stand in 1977 and studied biology at Utrecht University ( UU ) . He obtained a PhD from WUR for his mannikin - based analytic thinking of branching practice in wheat and the ecophysiological mechanisms underlie them . Medgar Evers has been awarded financial backing for a miscellany of projection , let in a WUR strategic investment funds grant for research into ‘ digital twins ’ in craw ( independent applier ) and a multi - million euro Cary Grant from the European Horizon 2020 plan for research into mixed crop ( co - applicant ) . He has been published in many renowned scientific journals , including New Phytologist , Trends in Plant Science , and Plant , Cell , and Environment .

Digital plantsEvers has worked in the study of Computational Crop Ecophysiology since 2011 . He uses digital plant to test how plant interactions relate to harvest performance and how we can act upon this , for example , by modifying crop management techniques or changing the spacial pattern of crop growing .

“ My heading is to contribute to the development of crop that execute better and utilize resourcefulness expeditiously , ” say Evers . He has already applied this approach to arable and horticultural crop ranging from monoculture and miscellaneous harvest systems boast grains and legume to tropic perennial tree crops and strictly see to it greenhouse systems .

From physiological processes to cropsAs part of his Crop Physiology chair , Evers ’s teaching and research both concentre on translating elaborate physiological processes into crop performance . This includes analyzing the social occasion of physiological plant life holding and scaling them up to crop tier , taking into account environmental factor and crop management , as well as the fundamental interaction between individual plants in the craw . Using modern measuring techniques and simulation model , Evers value the holding of the shoot , peculiarly in sex act to photosynthesis , as well as the property of the root system .

“ Our understanding of physiological physical process in plant is incessantly growing and becoming more elaborate , ” says Evers . “ The Crop Physiology group has the knowledge and tools to translate processes into implications for crops as a whole in terms of climate shape and emphasis constituent such as drought . ”

Mixed crop systemsEvers ’s role in the Crop Physiology chemical group will also include expect at mixed crop systems . “ Mixed harvest show hope as a way of moving towards more efficient use of resources for harvest growth , ” suppose Evers . “ At the present moment , not much of the research in this area is looking at the physiologic dimension of plant life that tend to be specifically give tongue to in motley craw systems and ensure strong performance and efficiency . I recall there ’s a lot of electric potential there , and I need to make progress in that orbit over the next few years . ”
