Learning to garden in a new zone
Today we are visiting Nancy Martin ’s garden .
I will be 72 years quondam in September . I live in Apollo Beach , Florida . However , I am a aboriginal of Virginia and experience there most of my life . In the summer of 2016 we moved into our current home . This house was a raw figure on a small plenty , a white canvas . I was unfamiliar with gardening in Florida . I had endure in a home on a large wooded circumstances on a lake in Virginia for over 30 class . All the plants in my Virginia home were large and well found . I shortly found a grass lawn enkindle in the summer heat in Florida , and my yard was so modest there was n’t much room for a yard and garden too . I dig out up all the grass in my backyard and planted my Secret Garden . All of my trees werestarted from seedand many of my plants fromcuttings . I found that even full - Lord’s Day plants could grow in some nuance ; I think they even enjoy it . These photos are a journal of my 2022 garden .
It is clean-cut that Nancy has memorise how to make plants happy in her new climate !

Apollo Beach is warm enough that a wide range of plant can be grown , include thePhalaenopsisorchidat the top , which is familiar to most of us as ahouseplantbut can live outside as long as temperature stay mostly tender and above freezing .
Some of these flowers are intimate to Northern gardeners , like the daylily ( Hemerocallishybrid , Zones 4–11 ) and sunflower ( Helianthusannuus , annual ) . Others , like theBulbinefrutescens(Zones 9–11 ) in the bottom center of this collage , are strength of fond climates .
I play all these icy lily-white flower look cool and marvelous in the Florida heat .

Many of the plants pictured here , like theCaladium(Zones 9–11 ) in the top left , are conversant to northerly gardeners asannualsfor growing in the summer , but they are perennial and long - lived in Florida .
Some things are the same with garden in every climate : found enough flowers and you ’ll get visits from beautifulpollinatorslike this butterfly !
Beautiful foliation is always welcome in the garden , from a striking variegated agave ( perhapsAgaveamericana , Zones 9–11 ) to the universal favored flame nettle ( Plectranthusscutellarioides , Zones 10–11 or as an annual ) .
