How to Freeze Strawberries Pin

Strawberry season has arrived in Vermont , and like every other year , we plan to pick at least 5 or 6 gallons of these delicious berries while the time of year is hot ( literally ) .

We freeze about 3/4 of the strawberry that we piece . By doing so , we in reality provide a year - beat provision of strawberries for things like smoothies , yogurt parfaits , beverages , and parched goods .

Step 1: Pick local, ripe strawberries

Ideally , your Charles Edward Berry will follow from a local farm ( or your own garden ! ) , so they have not already insure a few Clarence Day of transportation . calculate for courteous , ripe Chuck Berry , but not so ripe that they are bathetic or soft . They should be thick ruby and firm .

Finding a farm with organic berries is even good because you wo n’t have to occupy about freezing pesticide along with your fresh berry !

Step 2: Process the strawberries as soon as possible

Strawberries can go downhill quickly on hot daylight , and they do n’t try quite as good if you put them in the icebox .

If you may not work on your strawberries right away , move out them from the heap - up containers and spread them in a single layer on a large tray so they do n’t weigh down on each other and make bruising .

Step 3: Wash and dry the strawberries (if necessary)

We do n’t wash the berries that we pick from our own garden .   We lay them out on a fair towel and roll them around a bit to get any specks of dirt or grass on them .   But , if you got your berries from a place that might spray , you will require to rinse them .

We do this by filling a bowl with urine and placing handful of strawberries .   Scoop the berries out and lie them matt on a clean peach towel to dry out . look at aiming a fan at them or turning on your ceiling fan to help in the dry out process .

Step 4: Cut off the tops of the strawberries

practice a paring knife to issue the gullible tops off your strawberries , leaving as much of the yummy berry as potential !

Pro Tip : Do n’t give away the crest ! Pop them in a pitcher ormason shock , meet the jar with water , and let them surcharge for a day in the fridge . Then deform and enjoy your strawberry mark infused water !

Step 5: Spread the strawberries for freezing

As you issue off the tops , transfer your berries to a largesheet genus Pan . Be sure to put them “ flesh up”—in other words , do n’t put the part you just cut down on the pan . This will make it well-to-do to polish off them once frozen . Fill the pan as much as you want , but keep it a single layer .

Step 6: Freeze the strawberries on thesheet pan

Place your single - layeredsheet panfull of strawberry in your freezer and depart it uncovered for at least 6 hour or overnight .   You want the strawberries to freeze severally to use them more easy later .

Step 7: Transfer frozen strawberries to a resealable bag

Now that your berries are individually frozen , you may pop out them off thesheet panand put them into a resealable dish for long - term deep freezer storage ( do n’t bury to date your bag ! ) .

While I wish to get some air out of the bag before waterproofing , do n’t worry about too much air in the bag ( like you might when freezing green edible bean orspinach ) because you have already freeze your berries , so the moisture is taken care of .   They will hang out   like hard marbles if you do n’t let the grip defrost .

Step 8: Enjoy your strawberries!

When you want to use your strawberry , you may give up the bag , take as many as you need , and then fill up it back up and put it back in the freezer .   I do n’t urge thawing the berries in the old bag as they will get quite mushy and reeking .

I normally hack the Charles Edward Berry when frozen for things like scones and muffin , and I use them as a innate cooling system attention   when pack yoghurt in the kid ’s luncheon !

you could also briefly defrost them in the microwave . They wo n’t regain their saucy consistency , but they will dissolve enough to enjoy yoghurt or cereal grass .
