Drew Barrymore can nail the very moment she became “ totally obsessed , ” by her own admission , with domicile design . It was 2001 , and she was sit down on the storey of the wood - impanel living room of her Montecito , CA , house , asterisk at the lone object in the space : a profoundly uninspiring metallic element desk . before that year , she ’d lost most of her possessions — which , she say , included a sizable record collection but very little furniture — in a flak at her former situation in Los Angeles . For calendar month , she ’d been camping out in her new abode with next to nothing . “ It was barren walls , bare floors . I did n’t have a can opener . I did n’t have a bedsheet , ” she state . “ That day , l look around my empty living way and thought , OK , this is puzzle really depressing . I have got to become a housewife . ”
And boy , has she ever . After spending nearly 20 years wallpapering , painting , and furnishing her West Coast home to eclectically layered perfection , Drew now live in a sunny , art - fill up flat in Manhattan with her two daughters , Olive , 10 , and Frankie , 9 — plus four cat , two dogs , and an occasionally free - ranging bearded tartar lounge lizard named Jeremy . The phratry relocated to be closer to the girls ’ grandparent and full cousin . Their father , Drew ’s ex-wife - husband Will Kopelman , is a native New Yorker .
Rounded shapes are a intention signature for her Beautiful line at Walmart , Drew says . “ Our rule for the assemblage was no sharp corner . ”

Housed in a gracious prewar construction on the Upper East Side , the three - bedroom space feels equally homelike and quirky , charming and magnetic — very much like the actress - turned - talk - show innkeeper herself . In the foyer , for good example , not only were the floor - to - ceiling bookshelf painted white but so were the literal Holy Writ , which are interspersed with a collection of vintage Greco - Roman - style busts that Drew collected on frequent scrolls through eBay , Chairish , and Etsy . In the animation elbow room , where oversize windows overlook a court garden , the fireplace mantle is clear with a dried flower installation highlighted by a giant foraged white Anglo-Saxon Protestant nest . “ It came from a picture shoot , and afterward I was , like , ‘ Do not remove that . I ’m keeping it ! ’ ” she says . And in her bedroom , where the bed is swathed in chic gray fabric and the floor covered in plush , pale carpet , she ’s conceal the large television receiver behind a hippie - fab macramé wall hanging .
Drew ’s word in designing her rest home were “ disarm and relaxing . ” As she pretend absolved on TikTok — where she posts before - and - after cleaning videos of her flat in a chaotic , mussy state any officious parent of young children can relate to — she has zero interest in circularise an nimbus of idol . “ When multitude come in here , I desire them to sense like they can put their invertebrate foot up and never leave — no uptightness and no fancy sofas , ” she suppose . Indeed , hers fall from an outlet store ; she hit the back cushions and throng them with what she call “ large , downlike , yummy ” pillows for a personal look . The rug , meanwhile , is shaggy , white , and Moroccan - style . “ The shaver will likely bankrupt it before long , ” she says , “ but that ’s OK because it ’s from IKEA . ”
rather of pricey furniture , Drew prefers to commit her budget to artistic creation , good lighting ( she wish Nipponese - style paper globe pendants for their lovesome gleam ) , and her near - constant nursing home improvement and ornament projects . In recent years , she had her sleeping room ceiling deal in star - print wallpaper and her entryway level painted in a checker board pattern . Currently , she ’s design to raise the dining room — where the kinfolk rust when Olive and Frankie have n’t require over the table with fine art projects — by covering the walls and ceiling with bone - white tiles from Clé . “ It ’s going to be like a hopeful and sheeny cave , ” she say . “ Things are invariably incite around and change here . One of my best friend recently told me , ‘ I ’m not coming to your house any longer for dinner party because you ’re just give way to rearrange the furniture the whole prison term . ’ And he ’s totally right . If he derive over , I ’m definitely go to ask him to pay heed picture . ”

abode purpose — the innovation of what are , by definition , secret distance — might seem like a unusual fixation for an extrovert . An actress who loves mass ( she ’s a big hugger ) , she ’s used to feeding off the energy of audience , having been in front of tv camera since she was in diapers . ( Before steal hearts as Gertie inE.T. , she was doing TV and commercials . ) But for Drew , “ dwelling house making , ” as she call in it , is both an expression of creativity and a means of taking fear of herself and her family .
After a famously rough childhood — she was legally emancipated from her parents at age 14 , then two years later she laid bare her struggles with mental health and substance vilification in her memoir , trivial Girl Lost — feather her nest is about creating her own psychological safe haven and giving her little girl the ardent , comforting home she never knew . For a while , she even considered making a career out of her ego - taught grace acquisition . “ There was a farsighted stop of metre when I thought I could go into internal design and that would make me felicitous , ” she says . “ I could do all my thrifting and shopping ; I could make things unique — I wo n’t ever be biscuit - cutter . I think I could even do a show around it . And that ’s where I was lead when this char called and was like , ‘ Would you ever consider doing a talk show ? ’ ”
The Drew Barrymore Show , start its quaternary time of year in September , is , like her home , a true reflection of Drew . Rather than stick to the typical daytime chat format , she do out to create a space where witness “ felt invited , ” she says . “ I did n’t need this , like , freakish interview dynamic that I ’ve been on the other side of my whole liveliness , where you ’re just expect to tell anecdotic stories . ” Instead , she get up close and personal with invitee ( scooting her chair over to obtain hands has become a signature move ) , has conversation with her audience that almost resemble group therapy ( so many hugs , periodic tear ) , and shows off her blueprint chops ( along with regular guest interior decorator Mikel Welch ) . With viewership up 70 percent year - over - year last season , the show has been an unentitled striking .

Despite that success , the TV show is just one aspect of Drew ’s postmotherhood vocation shift and , in the end , her midlife renaissance . “ When I start out take kids , I did n’t want to be playing role and venture to be dissimilar the great unwashed , ” she says of her conclusion to break her acting vocation . “ Everything change for me . I just could n’t do it . ”
set up new projects is “ very nerve-wracking , ” Drew says . “ But it ’s also highly fun . wager on yourself is a good thing . If you break , you learn — and then you hold that knowledge to the next endeavor . ”
And so she pour herself into undertaking that catch one’s breath on the theme of Drew being utterly and uniquely Drew . There ’s her mag , Drew;her cookbook , Rebel Homemaker;her Flower Beauty line of cosmetic and skincare ; and Beautiful , her collection of cookware , contrivance , and , now , furnishing for Walmart . ( The first piece , a white bouclé swivel lounger called the Drew Chair , sold out in 72 hours . ) This diverse list of ventures — what does eye shadow , you might enquire , have in common with galvanic kettles and tune fryers?—makes good sense to Drew . “ It just became about a whole world I like living in , ” she aver . “ If you ’re swatching cosmetics , you ’re swatching colours , and that ’s not too far off from framework , and if you live in a dwelling where you ’re perpetually layering and embellish and pull in , you ’re just in that mentality . It all kind of fall into place . ”

Designing means produce something from bread . Decorating means finding things all over the place and putting them together . I do both .
For Drew , being an enterpriser is both a creative outlet and serious business . “ I do n’t pertain to creative person who do n’t accept that you need to think about hard-nosed realities , and , at the same metre , I ’m not interested in being postulate with businesses who do n’t appreciate and protect and nurture creativity and creative people . I really bang tire both hats . ” To tip her creative side , she ’s always scanning for inspiration , whether in magazines , on her travels , or walking around her neighborhood . “ I will chase someone down the street and ask , ‘ Can I please photograph your skid ? It ’s the double-dyed precious coral , ’ ” she says . “ And then once I find inspiration like that , I will search until I find something to enforce it to . Otherwise , I will drive myself utterly bonkers over Passion of Christ without way out . ”
When it comes to the business organisation side of the equation , however , she ’s more focused on what she does n’t see , an approach credited to her daughter ’ grandfather , Arie Kopelman , who had a long career in advertising before becoming prexy and COO of Chanel . “ When I was launch Flower Beauty , I was having the grueling metre adjudicate between two very unlike color schemes for the promotion , ” Drew say . “ His advice was , ‘ Go out and look at everything . Then ask yourself what you have n’t seen and do that . ’ It was such a brilliant lesson from him and just made everything so clear , because designing really is about fill up hole in the market and coming up with solutions for how to subsist . It ’s not fall from an ethereal , arty place . ”

Drew is on a quest to bring lulu to the home base through her latest credit line for Walmart . She gathers inspiration from swatch , imagery , and social media . “ I do n’t know where I ’d be on this planet without Pinterest , ” she say .
In the month to descend , her Beautiful line will be expound with more home products , including a second iteration of the Drew Chair — this time in green . ( She spent months commingle the consummate salvia , one that ’s a little grayish . ) The ultimate goal , she says , is to come up with strategy that make “ all of the things we ’re force to interact with every Clarence Shepard Day Jr. — the clothes hanger , garbage can , items on the kitchen counter — appear and find aesthetically inspiring . ”
Her latest fixation : how to camouflage electrical cords . “ There ’s a cause you never see those thing in catalogs and mag — they’re despicable ! ” she say . “ But in real life sentence they ’re everywhere . We ca n’t get away from them . ”

Being a creator — whether of movies , boob tube content , lipsticks , or sluggish cooker — is not easy , she admits , but she ’s figuring out how to do it her own means . “ We get challenged , and we doubt ourselves . I go through that all the meter . But the key , I ’m finally learning as I ’m closing in on 50 , is to not countenance those challenges be an identity crisis . At the terminal of the day , we all have to be braw enough to be ourselves . ”
