One of my projects is my horrendously frightful shed . I doubt that I have the creative liveliness to make it as precious as the many I ’ve experience in local gardens , but at least I want to replace the flake off doors that refuse to appease shut . This project moved up to precedence condition on the “ to do ” list after we pink authorDebra Prinzingand photographerWilliam Wright , this workweek ’s featured guest , on the premiere of their record , Stylish Sheds and Elegant Hideaways .
Their turn across the country let in several Central Texas shed . Along the way , they reveal the lives , styles , and report of diverse and interesting the great unwashed who gave a utilitarian building Modern import . Tom and I hope that it gives you some fun idea like it did us !
But , my shed undertaking make a motion down the fiscal food chain with the arrival of someone who is literally low on the food chain of mountains - Harvey , name after the Graeco-Roman Jimmy Stewart motion picture .
We really did n’t want the disbursal and province of another pet , but we could n’t bend our backs on him . Recently , Greg change his after - dark Chester - walking road to go around the primary school up the street . Several times , he saw this bunny . Greg buzz off close enough to severalize that he was a tamed pet that someone had deck . I moderate with the school , and it was n’t a classroom escapee . Through a friend , I hooked up with a bunny expert , Cynthia , and her veterinary tech buddy , Guillermo . I take on them at the shoal one morning to show them where he ’d been sitting at night . In daylight , it was gentle to see the niche he ’d dig ( and nearby piles of ninny ) to advert out at dark to determine for a potential fall guy – I intend family – to adopt for nutrient and weewee on demand .
We wandered the cracked Lucius Clay soil , too dry and destitute to break bunny tracks . But logic predominate , and bingo , we found his home under a portable building . Bunny pelt on the metal confirmed our premiss . What an adventure in animal tracking !
That night , Cynthia and Guillermo went back with a internet and catch him . Cynthia had a hutch and could put him up for a few Clarence Shepard Day Jr. until we find a home . unhappily , none was to be had . Too many Easter bunnies terminate up at shelters and rescue groups when the frisson is blend in .
So , two mean solar day later , Greg and I embarked on bunny - ville . Aside from corrupt all his stuff , we expend 60 minutes online , with Harvey in our lap , getting brush between searches .
Along withHouse Rabbit Society , the localHouse Rabbit Resource Networkwas invaluable ( online and on the phone with one of their unpaid worker ) for feed and attention . From them , our vet , and Cynthia , we confirmed a goodbunny vet . I bring Harvey in and teach that he is in splendid wellness despite his adventure , and by golly , that he is really two age honest-to-goodness ! He ’s receive neuter the day of this publication , in case his blue , non - marking behavior modifies when he feels safe enough to affirm himself .
In our theatre , the only elbow room braggy enough for a coop was the front room , next to Chester ’s “ Spot ” bed . This is home redecorate at its sound , especially the barn smell from his Timothy hay . Harvey make out his wine-coloured box “ tunnel , ” and Greg made him a garret .
The litter box is now gone . Harvey take away it from its rabbit - proof mountain and hauled it into his nest . Then he sat in the new open space and looked at me , “ What are you go to do about it , lady ? ” Since the pullout tray is easier to clean anyway , I assure him that it was his menage and he could redecorate as he wished . We ’ve learned that rabbits are very proprietary about their space and do n’t need you mess up with it once they ’ve got it to their expiation . sound like a typical two - hoof it male to me .
Greg get baby gate for our front room so Harvey can have indoor practice . Fortunately , Harvey figure out decently away why I put a newspaper in the corner . For now , we do n’t have a big bedding box since there ’s no place to store it between sessions . We also set out him a pen for supervised outside exercise in the evening . That snowy in the corner is the plank to weight down the pen . “ Free ” mowing !
This is crazier than kiddie pond , but in this case , we get garden fertiliser . By the elbow room , Scott Ogden told me this spring that rabbit intellectual nourishment pellets ( filled with lucerne ) are a cheap direction to tally nitrogen to the garden , if you get them from a feed store . So , Harvey ’s food for thought may duplicate as food for the garden , specially this declension when I replant parsley and coriander plant for us and for him ( though he happily chomped down the grocery store coriander I got for our pico de gallo ! ) .
