A look back at the gardening season

Today ’s picture look back at some highlights from the past gardening season .

In the spring , a breakstone ( Saxifragahybrid , Zones 4–8 ) puts out clouds of bloom . Saxifrages are classic habitant of rock gardens , often grown mostly for their beautiful foliage , but the flower presentation can be wonderful as well .

A beautiful weigela ( Weigelaflorida , Zones 4–8 ) shows off in spring . The flowers on this one open up a pallid pink and darken as they age , giving a multicolored burden on each branch .

A beautiful variegate dogwood tree ( Cornuskousa‘Woof Eyes ’ or a similar cultivar , Zones 5–8 ) is just coming into bloom here , but the variegated leafage puts on a show all time of year . motley motley like this will always be a bit less vigorous than their all - green counterparts , so it ’s good to give them a piddling extra TLC to get them search as beautiful as this .

These hydrangea ( Hydrangeamacrophylla , Zones 5–9 ) are just issue forth into bloom . The new bud are almost yellow before stretch and beginning to show their mature colors .

This huge , soft - yellow flower looks likeAbelmoschusmanihot(annual ) , a close relation of the edible okra , grown for its vast , beautiful blooms . Each flower lasts only a single day , but flower are produced all summer .

This dwarf , treble - flowered whiteRhododendronwelcomes take form with a profuseness of beautiful blossom .

Jeffersoniadubia(Asian twinleaf , Zones 4–7 ) greets spring with masses of lavender heyday , followed by attractive foliage . It is a wonderful perennial for a shaded garden .

This reasonably unbelievable magnolia with Brobdingnagian , dark red flowers depend like it might be the variety ‘ Vulcan’(Magnolia‘Vulcan ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , which is a hybrid magnolia with some of the darkest red flowers in the genus .

It is always fun this time of year to look back at the highlights of the horticulture year . I hope you ’ll send in some nip of your garden through the retiring twelvemonth !
