Bulbs worth planting
Today we ’re in St. Paul , Minnesota , visiting with Susan Warde .
Tulipsdon’t do well for me , and I do n’t have manydaffodils , but here ’s a seasonal tour of somebulbor bulblike plants that grow in my garden .
Dutchman ’s breeches(Dicentracucullaria , Zones 3–8 ) is anative spring ephemeral . Technically the hush-hush parts comprise of tuber , but they are decidedly bulblike . Interspersed with the ferny leaves of the Dutchman ’s rear of tube are Siberian squill(Scilla siberica , Zones 2–8 ) , which ferment the intact garden into a sea of risque inApril .

Another April bloomer is our native trout lily(Erythronium albidum , Zones 3–8 ) . Its mottled foliage echo those of the yellow trillium(Trilliumluteum , Zones 4–8 ) , seen in bud in the low part of the photo .
Red trillium(Trillium recurvatum , Zones 4–9 ) also has mottled leave of absence . The wine - crimson flowers are not very showy , but these are planted next to a walkway where I can appreciate their subtlety .
Flowering in mid - Mayare these frail daffodils(Narcissustriandrus‘Thalia ’ , Zones 3–8 ) . Pure white , with multiple blooms per stem , they ’re my favorites .

What would a garden be without lilies ? These martagons(Liliummartagonhybrids , Zones 3–8 ) , the first to flower in my garden ( earlyJune ) , are ascertain here amongHeuchera , Hosta , and Canadian ginger(Asarumcanadense , geographical zone 3–7 ) .
With its small bloom and recurve petals , this Asiatic lily(Lilium‘Corsage ’ , Zones 3–7 ) resemble a martagon . I ordain nine electric light in the fall of 2019 and 13 more the follow evenfall . This pastJunethere were more than 60 flowering stalks in the garden . The blossoms lack anther , so they do n’t attractbees , but they also do n’t dust you and your vesture with orange pollen .
An obscure Asiatic lily , this is the first perennial I ever bribe , more than four 10 ago . It was labeled as “ yellow . ” Surprise ! Not long ago I absent all orange bloom from my garden except this one , which I put in a shady , teetotal expanse . It hold open coming back in spite of mistreatment .

This beautiful lily is an Orienpet , ‘ Silver Scheherazade ’ ( zone 4–8 ) . Tall , graceful , long - flowering — I could n’t defy order more of them for next time of year , even though the cherry-red lily beetles were a scourge last summer .
Another of my favorite is the Oriental lilyLilium speciosum‘Album ’ ( Zones 5–8 ) . It ’s not peculiarly robust , but it start out flowering in lateAugustwhen all my other lilies are done .
Autumn crocus(Colchicumautumnale‘Album ’ , Zones 4–9 ) is not related to truecrocuses , though like them it grows from a corm rather than a true bulb . It sends up large , floppy , tuliplike leave in the give that finally die back , and you forget all about it . Then in mid - Septemberup pop these striking leafless efflorescence . In my garden they look through the leafage of prairie smoke(Geumtriflorum , Zones 3–7 ) . Behind them in the picture is a daylily .
