Autumn Colour. Leaves and Berries.
Here in the UK we never get the splendid autumn color that I have see on blogs such as Beth ’s atPlant Postings . This Autumn has been fantastically mild and we have n’t had the moth-eaten frosty nights which avail to create really brilliant autumn colour . Nevertheless , we are lucky in Suffolk to be able to visit a tremendous 20 - acre arboretum , East Bergholt Place , which was position out at the turn of last century by the great - grandfather of the present possessor Rupert Eley who has a baby’s room here call The Place For Plants . It is beautiful in Spring , but it is also fantastic in Autumn . One of my preferent trees for Autumn colour is theLiquidambar . I believe it is dependable to choose it in leaf to get the folio gloss you want . ‘ Worplesdon ’ burn up quite early and seems to be quite authentic in its glowering red colour .
Liquidambar styraciflua ‘ Worplesdon ’
The rareLiquidamber styraciflua‘Burgundy ’ bewilder its autumn colour later and it is only just get to colour up now . But it maintain on to the leaf colour much longer .

Liquidamber styriciflua ‘ Burgundy ’
Liquidambarstyriciflua‘Palo Alto ’ is another rarefied tree with a nifty autumn colouring .

The next oneLiquidambar stryricflua ‘ stare ’ has has really deep excision , virtuoso - shaped leave of absence . The other star amongst Autumn Tree is of course theAcerand there are so many of them with grand autumn colouring . My personal favourite isAcer palmatum‘Osakazuki ’ , but if you have way for a bombastic tree diagram how about this wonderfulAcer rubrum‘Scanlon ’ ? I was bowl over by the ardent red leaves .
Acer rubrum ‘ Scanlon ’
On a much littler scale , this lovely littleAcer volt-ampere . dissectum‘Viridis ’ would fit into any garden . I fell in love with it .

Liquidamber styriciflua ‘Burgundy’
Acer var . dissectum ‘ Viridis ’ .
One of the attractions of the next one , Acer palmatum‘Nicholsonii ’ was the fact that it has beautiful red key as well as fantastic red coloured leaves .

I do n’t think that I would ever choose aPrunusfor its autumn colour butPrunus serrulata‘Royal Burgundy ’ has red foliation all summer and the colour intensifies in the Autumn . I am not very keen on great blowsy cherry blossom though , so this tree wo n’t be find a place in my garden .
genus Prunus serrulata ‘ Royal Burgundy ’ .
Having spent quite a bit of time this week trying to get free of yet another horribleViburnum tinus , ( 2 last , 6 to go ) I am loth to say nice things about one of its family . ButViburnum furcatumis rather extra . Its flowers are lovely and look at its fall dress .

Viburnum furcatum
If you wish your fall colour to be butter -yellow rather than red and orangeness then how about a lovely Maidenhair tree , orGinkgo ? This unuusual tree has no relatives , it is a living fossil see back 270 million years . Another endearing Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree for golden - chickenhearted , autumn foliage is the Shagbark Hickory , Carya ovata . This wonderful tree is one of the wiz of the botanical garden at this time of the year . stand under it is like standing in a pool of fair weather .

Acer rubrum ‘ Scanlon’
Rupert Eley has The National Collection ofEuonymus , so every twelvemonth I go along to enjoy some colour and wait at theEuonymus . I will show you some of theEuonymuscollection in my next post , but for now here are a few fruits and berry that enamor my eye .
As you drive in to the glasshouse there is a row of Rowan tree . It is a pink variety ofSorbus hupehensiswhich looks wonderful against a blue sky . In the botanical garden there is a large whiteSorbuswhich I think is a Japanese salmagundi calledSorbus glabrescens ; although I may be wrong , there was no recording label .
I have always be intimate the gold berries ofSorbus‘Joseph Rock ’ .

Acer var. dissectum ‘Viridis’.
Sorbus‘Joseph rock ‘n’ roll ’
I notice the travel along tree for the first clock time this year . I trust it is a seedling of ‘ Joseph Rock ’ . It has very large Berry which are a particularly vibrant and shiny shade of amber . It is calledSorbus‘Copper Kettle ’ .
Sorbus ‘ cop tympani ’ .

Acer palmatum‘Nicholsonii’
I love the genus ofMalusbecause of their beautiful blossom and the wonderful fruit in Autumn , which in some case hold up into the wintertime . I have a huge specimen of the ubiquitousMalus‘Golden Hornet ’ in my garden which someone planted years ago . It is a lovely sight at the moment but there are well yellow one around now .

If I was choosing a yellow -fruited crab apple now I would go for the endearing rosy- tinct yellow ‘ bufflehead ’ or the gorgeousMalus‘Comtessa de Paris ’ which has lovely , lily-livered fruit which last until Christmas and do n’t seem to reverse the tight brown colouring material which see so awful afterward on ‘ Golden Hornet ’ .

We may not all have way for a tree but there are so many shrubs with lovely berries to enrapture at the instant . I love the shiny black berries ofAronia melanocarpaand the lovely fall foliation go down them off beautifully .

Viburnum furcatum
If you opt red then how about the awe-inspiring Charles Edward Berry on thisBerberis georgii ?
Berberis georgii
I would love one but it is unvoiced to get hold of ; there is a wait listing for it at the nursery here , because everyone who envision it in the arboretum need one . I trust the berries are sterile so propagating it is a wearisome process . Another unusual bush with masses of ruby berries is an unusualViburnum . I did n’t see this one in the arboretum at East Bergholt . The next photo was taken at the wonderful West Acre Gardens baby’s room in North Norfolk .

Viburnum betulifolium
The birch - leaved Viburnum is quite scarce but for an amazing berry display it is invincible . The only drawback is that it is a bit drab and slow at other fourth dimension of the class .
I will finish with another strange yield which I saw in the garden at West Acre . The amazing fruit ofAkebia quinata . Now that ’s something you do n’t see very often . I believe you need more than one plant in decree to get fruit . I really care that all or some of the lovely flora I have bear witness you today were in my garden . And I care that my garden had elastic boundaries . I really demand an botanical garden . Do n’t we all ? I have a playscript by George Courtauld called ‘ An Axe , a Spade and Ten Acres ‘ and the author says that these things are the requirement of life . He tote up that an fair to middling supply of raging water , books and lavatory report are the sumptuosity . Perhaps he has a dot . Like most of us , I seem to have the luxuries but not all the essential .

Gorgeous . I had no mind that you could get different kinds of sweet gum ! It is the most dependable plant for fall colour here . It is another of those plant like ceanothus that go to the UK and come back to the US much improve . This is a sensational collection of Tree and shrub with berries and colourful leaves that count swell in fall in a climate that is meek than northeastern United States . Lots of in effect thought here . Many thanks for showing us this .
Such incredible fall colour ! have intercourse the variety show of berries and fruit , especially those that will last through part of wintertime ! Yes , we do all demand at least ten Acre worth of botanical garden along with the mean to set and care for it all . Perhaps there should be some sort of government program to match gardeners with liberal estates .
As you ’ve been up to Norfolk … bootiful . I recollect I have decrease in love with Acer ‘ Viridis ’ too .

What a gravid post just wedge - full of fall coloring material from Tree and berries ! I too think we all should have way for our own personal botanical garden .
What a beautiful assortment ! When you live in an region that sustain comparatively little in the way of fall color , I consider you appreciate what you get all the more . As you might conceive of , we do n’t get much in the way of fall color here either but liquidambers and Japanese maple are also among our expert informant of fall colour . My persimmon trees also take on delicious hue but they ’ve show up no polarity of wrick yet .
Thanks for the link reference ! really , these colors are quite vivacious . arresting actually – particularly the berries and the Nipponese Maples . I like what you said about “ I demand an arboretum . ” Ha ! I feel the same way . Of course it would be nice to have the faculty and the volunteers of an arboretum , too . 😉 Lovely photos , Chloris !

A most informative and enjoyable post Chloris . It would indeed be great to have an ever expanding aboretum to accommodate the regard list . Much always want more . On symmetricalness I think that I would swop the axe for Book but a nigra and ten acres would more than suffice .
Well , you teach something every mean solar day ! I had no estimation there were so many cultivar of genus Liquidambar – I ’m hoping to go to Wisley next week , I ’ll have to reckon very carefully for label on the trees now ! I agree with your assessment of Malus ‘ Golden Hornet ’ , I first come across it in January at Capel and think it a scabby little matter . I prefer the reddish ones but actually quite like the look of the Comtesse . I desire to get a crab Malus pumila for the gardens here as they ’re so utile in preserve as well as being wondrous ornamental in winter . Lovely post , Chloris , and thanks for all the comprehensive information !
My goodness Chloris what incredible color in those trees and I was overwhelmed by the different biased berries … stunning displays .

Sorbus‘Joseph Rock’
Lovely plants and capital picture taking too . I particularly make love the Viburnum betulifolium . I would beg to differ on the Prunus front – these faithfully show prominent autumn colour where I am in the East . For something with more refined flush , I rule Prunus x subhirtella ‘ Autumnalis ’ indispensable .
Beautiful plant and corking photography . I particularly like Viburnum betulifolium . Have you tried Prunus x subhirtella ‘ Autumnalis Rosea ’ or Prunus sargentii – both with beautiful fall foliage and tasteful heyday …
