An English gardener in the Northwest
Back in October , we featuredLiz Sanborn ’s garden . Today she ’s share her mother ’s adorable garden . Clearly gardening runs in their origin !
Here is what Liz had to say :
I was claver my mammy today in Normandy Park , Washington — just SW of Sea Tac Airport — and took some photos . My mom , Marian Floyd , is English , and her garden is a reflexion of her ability to get anything to grow to tremendous size . Her flora reseed themselves abundantly , and it is gorgeous . She is a few blocks from Puget Sound and gets the cool morning air that comes off the piss . The menage is a beautiful brick Craftsman that my hubby built for her .

The pass up to Marian ’s house , build up by her boy - in - legal philosophy , is flank by lush plantings . There is no dubiety a very talented gardener lives here !
Big masses of Johnny - leap - up ( Viola tricolor , Zones 3–9 ) self - sow in masses in the garden . There are two things required for plants to ego - sow profusely like this in a garden . First , the plants ask to be very happy and well suited to the climate and conditions . secondly , they need to have space in which to seed themselves that is n’t all filled with other plants or covered with thick mulch .
Another plant life that will often self - sow when happy is scarlet flax ( Linum grandiflorum , yearly ) .

White and blue air are a perfect combination , always nerveless and sophisticated . Here , white star - of - Bethlehem(Ornithogalum umbellatum , Zones 4–9 ) flower through ego - sow blueish bury - me - nots(Myosotis sylvatica , Zones 3–8 ) . As beautiful as this combining is , be monish that star - of - Bethlehem can be invasive in some climates .
Another sight of blue - and - white perfection .
The garden is n’t just self - sowing annuals ! Here shrub provide color and social organisation , with a doublefile viburnum(Viburnum plicatumf.tomentosumZones 4–8 ) covered with white , hydrangea - like blooms , wall by other shrub with a form of colored and textured leaves .

Plants in the genusCeaonothusgo by the common name of California lilac . But I ’ve fetch to admit , they blow every lilac I ’ve ever seen right on out of the body of water . This spectacular specimen is a swarm of fat blue flowers . aboriginal along the west seashore of North America , the blue - flowered specie are poor performer in most other parts of the country . There are species aboriginal to eastern North America that are leisurely to acquire in a wide range of mood , but they all have much less impressive white flower .
